The Weekend Watering Hole, Saturday, January 7th-8th, 2017: Russian Roulette

Here’s some of the most recent articles about the U.S. intelligence agencies’ report on the Russian influence in Trump’s election.

First, here’s a PDF of the report itself.

Next we have relevant articles from yesterday’s Washington Post and the New York Times.

And then a couple of articles on Trump’s post-intelligence-briefing statements, one from the NY Times, and one from this morning’s Raw Story. Apparently Trump took time from his preoccupation with Arnold and The Apprentice to tweet a few idiocies while avoiding the ‘yuge’ Russian elephant in his room.

What will it take for Trump, his minions, and the GOP to finally admit that the chambers in the Russian Roulette revolver aren’t all empty?

This is our Open Thread – join in with whatever you want to talk about.

  1. ‘Follow the money’: Robert Reich explains exactly why Trump won’t condemn Russia

”Here’s the truth,” Reich wrote: “Over the years, Russian oligarchs, friends of Putin, have financed Trump’s projects and lent billions of dollars to Trump’s enterprises. In 2008, Donald Trump Jr., told a real estate conference ‘Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets,’ and continued, ‘we see a lot of money pouring in from Russia.’”

“The financial ties don’t end there,” Reich continued. “Trump’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, a longtime consultant to Viktor Yanukovich, the Russian-backed president of Ukraine who was overthrown in 2014, has done multi-million-dollar business deals with Russian oligarchs. Also: Trump’s pick for Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, CEO of ExxonMobil, came up through the ranks at Exxon by managing the company’s Russia account.”

      • ….and the selling of all public lands.

It’s only a matter of time before Republicans float the idea of repealing the 13th Amendment….

      • We are, imho, a small handful of steps short of ‘permanent’ fascist rule. If Trump (or Pence) should get 2-3 SCOTUS appointments (they already have one), and if Republicans manage to gain full control of a large majority of state legislatures (which seems to be their game plan) along with continuing control of the Legislative and Executive arms, our 240 year-old goose will be cooked.

Imagine, e.g., the consequences of a GOP-called Constitutional Convention (see Article V.), a situation where the GOP will be Constitutionally empowered — via control of 67% of states (34), to propose any number of Constitutional amendments that will suit their overall agenda. And IF they can manage control of 38 states (3/4 of 50), those amendments could easily be ratified, and the country changed to reflect the GOP’s (conservative-teabagger-fascist) defining politic, the one that’s driven by hate-fear-greed.

2016 pushed us closer to that outcome than we’ve ever been before, and 2018/2020 could serve to finish it, to finish “us” off (and to make Mexico happy to have that border wall, with Canada suddenly knowing they’d better build one – fastly!).

  2. Somewhere in a future galaxy:

A nine year old Alien child from Outer Space asks his mother: “Mommy, what caused the destruction of the planet once known as Earth?”

The Alien Mother replies: “The Twitter War of 2019.”

  3. Chuck Todd is interviewing Gramps and Miss Lindsey together! They’re sitting close enough to hold hands below the camera’s view!
