  1. A growing chorus of Senate Republicans including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) have called on Senate candidate Roy Moore to withdraw from a special election in Alabama if allegations prove true that the former judge initiated a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl nearly four decades ago.

“If these allegations are true, he must step aside,” McConnell said in a formal statement on behalf of all Republican senators.

Other Republican senators weighing in included Jeff Flake of Arizona, David Perdue of Georgia, John Thune of South Dakota, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Richard C. Shelby of Alabama and Patrick J. Toomey of Pennsylvania. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) called on Moore to step aside as well — and without couching his statement with “if true” language.

“The allegations against Roy Moore are deeply disturbing and disqualifying,” McCain said. “He should immediately step aside and allow the people of Alabama to elect a candidate they can be proud of.”

  2. From a friend of mine…..she nailed it.

A blanket condemnation of a person making accusations against someone wealthier or more powerful is an uninformed and one-dimensional position to take. You have to look at all the known elements of both the specific story, and the societal norms when something allegedly took place. Generally speaking, a woman who makes allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct by a man has been cast in the role of liar, fortune or fame seeker, or slut. This has remained consistent even with the efforts to equalize women’s rights during the past five decades. So you must ask, what does this person stand to gain by telling this story? Why would several women with no connection tell very similar stories? The only thing they will get is momentary relief that they unburdened themselves, followed by virtual stoning from Internet trolls and rabid supporters of the man they accuse. And when you cast the stone wrapped in a note that says, “what took you so long?”, put yourself in the place of a confused, powerless teen-aged girl. Forty years ago and today, that girl is outmatched when the accused is an older, educated man who works for the District Attorney’s office.
