Hey, a New Thread

A new baby in the family – especially in our family – deserves a brand new thread.  Our niece Emily (daughter of my brother Bobby and Wayne’s sister Judy) and her husband Michael brought Arlo James Johnson into the world shortly after midnight on August 13th.

Like all babies, Arlo James looks just like Winston Churchill, especially in this photo:

arlo james

But like all babies, he’s adorable when he’s asleep:

arlo james sleeping

Sadly, this world into which little Arlo was born is a crazy and dangerous place, but knowing Emily and Michael, they’ll be wonderful parents with the intelligence, humor and moral convictions to prepare Arlo to take on the world.

Moving along…I know it’s a little late for International Cat Day, but here’s some cuteness to make up for it:

kitten and toy waving

synchronized yawning

cheetah kitten bottle-feeding

Unfortunately, we now turn to politics.  Our old friend from ThinkProgress, Judd Legum, now runs a site called Popular Information.  He delves into the latest U.S. Postal Service sabotage here, but here’s an excerpt from his newsletter:

On Wednesday, facing an avalanche of criticism, DeJoy announced that he was suspending his most controversial initiatives, including limiting overtime, decommissioning mail sorting machines, and removing mailboxes.

Whether DeJoy, a Republican fundraiser and political operative, can be trusted is an open question. The conduct of the USPS warrants further scrutiny.

If you don’t want to take a chance, nearly every state has ways to return your mail-in ballot without using the USPS. Popular Information has compiled all the details for each state HERE.

Speaking of the USPS, here’s Paul Jamoil’s most recent ‘toon:

paul jamoil 08132020 usps

That’s enough of politics.  While I’m heartened now that the Biden/Harris ticket is ready to begin our fight to unseat trump, it’s going to take a lot of good news to dispel my depression and fear over everything else that trump is doing to undermine the upcoming election (along with every other institution he’s destroying.)

Until the election, I’ll continue to distract myself by watching the birds and critters outside my window during the day, and watching my Mets play baseball at night.  It’s as close to ‘normalcy’ that I can get.

Open Thread, talk about whatever you’d like.

  1. Thanks for the post, Jane.

How is everyone doing? I left Facebook back in May after they banned me one time too many for a post that no one with even 3rd grade reading skills could possibly mistake for a violation of their “Community (non) Standards,” so I don’t hear much from folks.

  2. Congrats on your new great neohew! He’s a cutie!
I know our Zooey has been having some issues. Has anyone heard from her since her move?

    • Hopefully, some of the following fuckwads involved in Bannon’s PAC have been/will be arrested as well:

      Edward-Isaac Dovere

Kris Kobach is the general counsel of the Build the Wall PAC that Steve Bannon was just arrested for being involved in as chairman. The advisory board includes Erik Prince, former CO congressman Tom Tancredo, Sheriff Dave Clarke and former pitcher Curt Schilling.

  3. Hi everybody and thanks for the message Jane.

In reference to Zooey, I saw a post she made where she indicated she was moving into what seemed like a communal living facility. It was at a Discus comment site, probably Raw Story or C&L.

My sister asked me about selecting who to vote for on our ballot and I over heard her passing on the advice I gave her. In a general election always vote for the Democratic candidate and in a primary cast your vote for a woman over a man and for a person of color over a white person.

In reference to mail-in ballots here in Florida, I just read that Trumps Mar-a-Lago address is a business and its not legal to use a business address as one’s voting address. I wonder how that would affect people with home based businesses or people who end up living in the building that once housed a now defunct business? And what about industrial buildings that have been remodeled into small business spaces and residential units?

I have become a fan of shopping at home for the things I regularly use. No more lugging big bundles of paper towels, toilet paper or bags of cat food on the bus. Also, when there’s a shortage of things, like toilet paper, its easier to check websites than going to a physical store to see if they’ve restocked. Just be sure to order enough items to get free shipping.

    Lets get TheZoo going again.

    • Glad to see that you got my message, pachy. 🙂

The only times I’ve run into Zooey have been at RS, but I know that she doesn’t ‘hang out’ there, just pops in unexpectedly now and then. I should check out C&L.

Apparently Hoodathunk has been hanging out at Wonkette, but a mutual friend sent out a bat-signal for him last week, so I’ve reconnected with him just recently, too. I haven’t seen him yet today, but as soon as I do, I’ll tell him to stop by for a visit.

I’d love to be able to ‘get the band back together’, if only we can find whoever’s left of ‘the band.’ It may mean I have to go on Facebook, as I do still get notifications about various Critters and Zoosters.

Gotta run for now, I’ll be back here later.

          • Oh, crap, I’m so sorry to hear that. What’s worse is that I probably got a FB notification from her at that time, and never looked at it. I’ve been so bad at keeping in touch with anybody, I ignore all of these notifications I get. (In fact, this morning FB said I had 73 notifications!) I DID see that you just had a birthday, so belated Happy Birthday to you!

This news about Zooey saddens me terribly, and makes me feel so guilty that I ignored her. I really am the world’s worst friend, I’ve been too occupied by my own depression when others have it so much worse. 😦

  4. Apparently I’m missing out on the ‘humor’ section of the DNC tonight. So far I’ve only caught part of Liz Warren’s speech, all of Obama’s, and all of Kamala’s, all from last night. Until tonight, we’ve been watching baseball, but, since one of the Mets tested positive for COVID, no game tonight or tomorrow night. I had been worried something like this might happen when the Mets went to Miami to play the Marlins, who had had something like half the team COVID-positive earlier in this abbreviated season. 😦

  5. Ah Jane, ya snuck this one in on me.
I have baby news too. I am a second time step-grandfather. Lillie Rae Brown was born between 6 and 7pm local time Tuesday evening to my step son and step daughter-in-law Will and Lauren. They should be home by now, fortunately the hospital where she gave birth is the Women’s and Children’s facility of Huntsville Hospital, so no covid overlap with the main facility.

    • Heh, I was wondering when you’d show up. Congrats on the step-granddaughter! I like the name “Lillie.” I can’t believe that they’d send a new mother and baby home so quickly, although honestly I don’t know how long our Emily stayed in the hospital. She was past-due, and went to the hospital on Monday morning (August 10th) to have the baby induced – then we heard nothing until that Thursday morning. Wayne and I were really worried, and we still haven’t heard why it took so long.

When do you get to see your new step-granddaughter? Is everybody quarantining and masking? I feel bad for Bobby and Judy, with Judy having been exposed (although she was masked and distancing) and now quarantining, thus delaying their first visit with the new grandchild.

I have to go to bed early tonight, but I’ll catch up with you again sometime tomorrow. 🙂

      • Lauren was overdue too, and they had planned to induce labor starting Monday night. Then the decision changed to c-section for 6pm Tuesday. The doctor didn’t have to put Lauren fully under so she recovered quickly.
The plan is for Will to stay with them for three weeks, then Lauren will be home with the baby another month. Then Grandma Rory (my ex) takes over as daycare full time so they both can work. I don’t know when I’ll see her in person.
Out of all of us, I’m the most isolated from risk, as I only go to the grocery once a week, and occasional trips into Home Depot. I am repairing my back yard fence as needed.
My ex is selling masks on Etsy, but she is getting almost all her orders locally from the Next Door app, and from car shops she delivers to for O’Reilly’s. I think she’s almost got more than she can do.

        • Like you, I only go grocery shopping once a week, sometimes every 10 days if I can manage it. Otherwise I never see anyone except Wayne. We still haven’t seen any family since Christmas. However, since both of us are pretty much hermits anyway, other than family occasions we’re not affected as much as more social people.

Wayne’s office didn’t fully reopen until after the 4th of July weekend, and they do use masks still where employees are in closer quarters.

Good to hear that Lauren is okay after her C-section. It sounds like they have a good plan in place for the transition to ‘back-to-work’, Hopefully you’ll be able to get a visit with the new baby during that time.

  6. Good news for fans of The West Wing – they’re getting the (surviving) band back together!

“The cast of acclaimed political TV drama “The West Wing” will reunite for a special episode in aid of Michelle Obama’s voter turnout drive, HBO Max announced Tuesday.

Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe and Allison Janney will reprise their roles as members of a fictional Democratic administration, in support of the “When We All Vote” campaign ahead of November’s election.

The special — to air this fall — will be…the first time the original, surviving cast and creator Aaron Sorkin have reunited in 17 years…”

  7. First blog post from the girls since March!

Trump lies and before you know it, you’re drinking bleach, sticking a lightbulb up your ass and using the C-word. #TrumpLies

(NOTE FROM HELEN – I use a lot of dirty words in this story. A lot even for me. And dirty even for me. If you suffer through the nasty language, I think you might enjoy the intended message. If not, I’m sorry. Get over it.)

Margaret, I know you didn’t watch the shit show this week, so I did. We pride ourselves on being informed so I suffered through it for the both of us. Here is what you missed:

Night One: Land of Heroes – Evidently most heroes are white and scream a lot.
Night Two: Land of Promise – The GOP promises that if you vote for Donald, you will never, ever have a black person as a next door neighbor. Plus! Melania promises that the guy who left his first two wives and then cheated on her will never, ever lie to you.
Night Three: Land of Opportunity – Given the opportunity, Mike and Karen Pence would probably tell me to my face that they are more Christian than I. Pence gives an amazing speech while simultaneously crawling up Trump’s ass. Also, Donald Trump really didn’t hug his kids enough… if at all.
Night Four: Land of Great Asshats – Ben Carson put a cup of coffee to sleep. In the land of greatness if you stay out past curfew, some white guy also out past curfew gets to shoot you. It’s in the constitution. Oh and, Trump lied.

    • Glad they started things up again! I like the “Ben Carson put a cup of coffee to sleep.”

Since the MLB decided not to play any games yesterday evening in solidarity with BLM, I left the convention on but muted. Then whenever I saw that MSNBC had cut away to ‘fact check’, I’d put the sound back on. It was a despicable use of the WH, just an ugly scene altogether with a million flags, too many people, just a big TV extravaganza for the bigass tv president.

  8. I had started reading this RS article the other day, and after the first paragraph I had to check to see who wrote it – turned out it was the wonderful Jim Hightower: https://www.rawstory.com/2020/08/the-2020-republican-party-is-an-embarrassing-disaster/

    Two brief excerpts:

“Instead of a political party, the GOP of 2020 has become a pathetic puppet show of weakling officials and sycophantic subordinates being jerked around by the maniacal whims of a bloated ego with despotic fantasies.”

“Republican senators, governors, captains of industry, elders and others who once had power, prominence, some prestige and maybe even a little pride now meekly wear his brand and kowtow to his conceits, leaving an entire party with a sole operating principle: “What he said” (even when they can’t figure out what he’s actually saying … or why).”

  9. This appeared on my dashboard today:
    Happy Anniversary with WordPress.com!
You registered on WordPress.com 12 years ago.
Thanks for flying with us. Keep up the good blogging.

Some of you may remember, I joined here on the first Zooniversary, so The Zoo is 13 years old now!

  10. Jane, congratulations on the birth of your new nephew (sp). They chose a great name! Unfortunately, our pet corgi, also named Arlo, passed a few days before yours was born. I must admit, your Arlo is much cuter, and will hopefully acquire better table manners while the “big people” eat. At least let’s hope he doesn’t bark.

It’s nice to see more than 2 people posting again. It’s good to get away from the great American “time suck” and black hole which has become Facebook.

    • Thanks, fatherbob, I’m sorry to hear about your Arlo (who I’m sure was actually cuter.)

And I apologize for going missing for so long. I HAD been putting together a new post, but when I was working on it I just go so damn depressed over all of the news. That was when trump kicked off the 4th of July at OUR Mount Rushmore announcing his planned attack on “the radical left.” I was so sickened by everything I was reading – still am, of course, and now it’s getting worse, but taking a break did help.

I don’t do FB, with a very few exceptions, i.e., if Paul Jamoil posts a new ‘toon. Yesterday, I had to laugh, FB told me I had 101 notifications that I was ignoring. 😉.

I just want to get through this election – I wish it were tomorrow, so that trump won’t have as much time to start a civil war.

  11. https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/29/politics/trump-kenosha-wisconsin/index.html

“When asked earlier Saturday if he will visit Kenosha, Trump said, “probably so” before praising the federal presence in Wisconsin.

“Probably so. We’ve had tremendous success as you know. We were finally able to get the go ahead from the local authorities to send in the National Guard,” Trump said. “Within a few minutes of the guard, everybody cleared out and it became safe.”

“When asked if the President would meet with the family of Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old Black man who was shot by police, White House spokesman Judd Deere said that the schedule hasn’t been fully ironed out yet.”

IOW, the Blake family doesn’t want to meet with trump, and trump doesn’t really want to meet with them.

  12. Proof the Trump Criminal Enterprise needs to rule the world to feel safe.

US slaps sanctions on war crimes court prosecutor

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday slapped sanctions on the top prosecutor of the International Criminal Court — a move that The Hague-based tribunal called a “serious” attack against the rule of law.

The economic sanctions against Fatou Bensouda and another senior ICC official, Phakiso Mochochoko, after earlier visa bans on Bensouda and others failed to head off the court’s war crimes probe into US military personnel in Afghanistan.

“Today we take the next step, because the ICC continues to target Americans, sadly,” Pompeo said.

  13. Guys, Zooey needs our help. She’s staying temporarily at a hotel (near the shelter that she’s in), which runs around $50/night. I got hold of Hoodathunk and we’re putting some money in her kitty, but she could use more.

If you want to text her, her number is 541-731-2398 – she has limited minutes. Since I can’t text, I called her and kept the conversation brief. I had been trying for days, but she didn’t recognize the phone number, but today she finally picked up.

The hotel is the Regency Inn, phone 541-746-5621. I simply called and said that I wanted to put money towards Laura Meier in Room 18. I told Zooey that I would call her again in a day or two. If even two people contribute $25/each, that’s one more night that she’s safe, has A/C and running water.

Just let me know if anyone can help – thanks, Zoosters!

  14. And, in case you missed it above, I’ll repost:

**Actually, it turns out it’s a little higher, but whatever anyone can spare would help. I’ll be in touch with Zooey sometime tomorrow, and will continue to check in on her as often as possible.

Just let me know if anyone can help – thanks, Zoosters!

    • Dear Jane, you are an angel. It was a pleasure to hear your voice again, and I began to remember what amazing people inhabit The Zoo and interwebs.

I sincerely apologize to all Zoosters for falling away from them and this place when my mental health took a nose dive a couple years ago. I will do my best to check in whenever I have access to the internet.

Thank you to those of you who contributed toward this room, and those who are keeping me in their thoughts and hearts. I am thankful that I am able to avoid this heatwave, and also use this time to recover from a recent fall. 💜

Oh, one more thing before I’m off to that lovely bed: Eat shit and die, Trump, you god-awful fucking pig fucker.

      • There you are, Z! No need to apologize, sweetie, we’re just glad that you’re more-or-less okay for the time being at least. Times are tough for so many people, but you’re our Zookeeper, we’ll do what we can for you. Rest up after that fall.

And it’s really Briseadh who deserves the credit for alerting me and giving us the opportunity to help.

Sleep well, and yes, FUCK TRUMP!
