The Watering Hole, Monday, August 27th, 2012: Monday Mitt Medley

Mitt Headspin

Today’s offerings are almost completely about Mitt Rmoney, via recent pieces on and

Here’s a few excerpts from the first FP article, titled “PIPE DREAMS – Why Mitt Romney can’t free America from Middle East oil.”, authored by Michael Levi:

“Republicans have frequently criticized Obama for his admittedly hodgepodge energy strategy, a charge repeated in the new plan. The Romney plan solves that problem by substituting a narrow fossil-fuel production strategy for a genuinely comprehensive plan. Much in that fossil-fuel strategy is reasonable. Romney would shift more power to the states by allowing them to approve drilling on their lands and near their coasts without federal intervention. He would streamline environmental reviews, in part through clear deadlines, and in part by handing more control to the states.

“If that were accompanied by more federal capacity to process permit applications — something that Romney has decidedly not promised to do — the result could be a win-win for business and the environment.”

That’s a HUGEIf…”, especially if it’s something that Rmoney “has decidedly NOT promised to do.”

“The plan is also mum on the other grave energy challenge the country faces: climate change. Reasonable people can differ on how much emphasis to place on climate change in U.S. energy policy, but it isn’t reasonable to ignore it entirely. The Romney plan does not mention climate at all. To be certain, surging production of natural gas can help curb U.S. emissions, but it will come nowhere close to delivering the reductions the country needs alone. Romney likes to quip that people “do not call [climate change] America warming, they call it global warming,” his way of saying that climate change can’t be confronted unilaterally.”

Yet Dubya Bush, supported by the Republicans, refused to sign the Kyoto Protocols, which would ‘confront’ climate change ‘globally.’ Rmoney’s “quip” is yet another example of how warped his sense of humor, his character and his logic are.

The article continues…

“There are many good reasons to embrace rising U.S. oil and gas production and to reform the way government regulates their development.”

If ‘reforming regulation’ involves eliminating regulations, then NO, there are no good reasons.

…and finishes with,

“The Romney strategy for fossil-fuel development has some reasonable proposals on both fronts. But when it comes to comprehensively exploiting energy opportunities and confronting energy-related risks, the strategy falls woefully short.”

Michael Levi’s article links to “The Romney Plan For a Stronger Middle Class: Energy Independence“, which sounds like a non-sequitur to me. But the “Executive Summary” seems even more ludicrous, i.e.:

“An affordable, reliable supply of energy is crucial to America’s economic future.
I have a vision for an America that is an energy superpower, rapidly increasing our own production and partnering with our allies Canada and Mexico to achieve energy independence on this continent. If I am elected president, that vision will become a reality by the end of my second term.” -Mitt Romney

Of course, Rmoney’s basic premise on which he builds some of his so-called “Energy Policy” is a lie:

“In the midst of the energy revolution taking place on state and privately-held lands across America, oil and gas production on federal lands somehow plummeted last year. This was no accident. President Obama has intentionally sought to shut down oil, gas, and coal production in pursuit of his own alternative energy agenda.”

In addition, Rmoney’s “Energy Policy” is extremely vague, with many of the ‘power points’ in some sections appearing to contradict other points within the same section. And quite a bit of the policy appears to be based on studies by Citigroup (“Citi GPS: Global Perspectives & Solutions, “Energy 2020: North America, The New Middle East?” Citigroup, 3/20/12”), investment company Raymond James (Raymond James U.S. Research, “Yes, Mr. President, We Believe We Can Drill Our Way Out of This Problem,” Raymond James, 4/2/12), and the Manhattan Institute (Mark P. Mills, “Unleashing The North American Energy Colossus: Hydrocarbons Can Fuel Growth And Prosperity,” Manhattan Institute, 7/9/12.)

On ThinkProgress, several recent articles demonstrated Mitt’s cluelessness and lack of ability to hear or comprehend what comes out of his own mouth. In this one, Mitt insanely states that “I am very proud of what we did [Romneycare in Massachusetts – which included an ‘individual mandate] and the fact that we helped women and men and children in our state… And then with regard to contraceptives, of course Republicans, myself in particular, recognize that women have a right to use contraceptives.” Huh? Since when, and for how much longer?

Then Rmoney gives a shout-out to the Birthers, telling an audience in Michigan, “Nobody has ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that I was born and raised.” Apparently Mitt can’t understand how much this one comment legitimatizes the Birther ignorati, especially in conjunction with the fact that seven (count ’em, SEVEN) Birther conspiracy advocates will be speaking at the RNC in Tampa.

While these are just a few examples of what’s been going on with Rmoney’s campaign, there’s sure to be a whole lot more interesting goings-on during the Republican National Convention, which may or may not start today. Should be fun!

This is our daily open thread — got anything to say about anything?

Sunday Roast: After-birthers

A funny thing happened just the other day…some guy known as “The Donald aka Carnival Barker” had his ass handed to him by a sitting U.S. President, via this:

Some say the President shouldn’t have caved to the birthers, but I say the President’s timing was exquisite.  He knew that no matter what he did, the true-believers would never come around to sanity or reason, so he waited for the perfect political opportunity to give them what they claimed all along they wanted — the long-form birth certificate — and did it in a way that simultaneously exposed Trump as the venal racist and bully he’s always been AND made Trump the great god and leader of the racist birther teabagger crowd.  Well played, sir.

I just love the President’s “can we just get over this tired old bullshit” attitude.  He gives the issue all the weight it deserves — NONE.

Josh Marshall has worked up a Taxonomy of Birtherism, and while he’s in the process if tweaking said taxonomy, I think it’s informative and appropriate: Continue reading

Nine-Twelve and white folks by the thousands are protesting government spending by marching on D.C.

They were remarkably silent when Bush ran up the deficit and debt; financing two wars off-budget and giving a massive tax-break to the wealthy. They didn’t care then about the disparity between the wealthiest and the poorest growing to the widest gap since medieval times.

But now that we have a president who suggests that we should provide health care for everyone, including those who don’t work – they take to the streets in droves.

Never mind the fact that due to Bush’s disasterous 8 years our economy tanked and millions of Americans lost their jobs – the bottom line with these folks is:  if you’re not working, you don’t deserve anything.

This author would like to allow every one of these protesters the right to opt out of Social Security and Medicare. They won’t have to pay those taxes, and they won’t be eligible to receive those benefits. If they don’t save enough for their retirement years, they’ll just have to keep on working. And when they’re no longer covered by private insurance, they can pay all their medical bills out of their own pockets.

And, while we’re at it, those who opt out of Medicare and Social Security should also forfeit the right to file bankruptcy. Their debts should be transferred to their heirs until fully paid, with interest. After all, if those of us who benefit from the taxpayer funded system burden our grandchildren with taxes to pay our benefits, so too should those who opt out.

Fair is fair.

From the Old World: Concerns

From 1918 until 1933 Germany had a democratic constitution. It had very high standards when it came to personal liberties and free speech, even if the words were wielded to harm and ultimately destroy the first functioning Republic in Germany.

Enemies of any democratic order started to throw doubts on the legitimacy of the Government right at the beginning. Eschewing policy discussions, they used taunts, false allegations and ridicule to demean the Republic’s representatives, institutions and symbols, thus shattering the already weak support for the Republic. Add to that the economic woes of the 1930’s and you see the foundation for the dictatorship that followed and the loss of any civil liberties Germans has had before.

What I have seen in your blogs and newspapers lately leaves me concerned for the prospects of the Obama Presidency. It is not mainly the ever loonier ravings of the clueless. There are absolutely inane and insane claims out there, from the birth certificate to the death panels to the indoctrination of your children. Some of the screaming mob of the right are hardly eloquent enough to order a one course meal in one sentence. Some are more than a few cards shy of a full deck, like Glenn Beck or Ann Coulter. Their pathetic appearances tend to make us cringe or laugh or both. However, we should never underestimate the power of their vile propaganda. Grain by grain the very fabric of your President’s standing will erode. All criticism from the right aims at discrediting the person and not his policies, thereby destroying the trust in  the office of President.

What concerns me most is the institutionalized disrespect for your President. The heckling during President Obama’s speech is only one indication for that. Officials from Congressmen to school district supervisors are working hard to show that they neither respect Barack Obama as a President nor respect him as a man. They pick up the blathering of the crazies and disguise it in a more acceptable language to be made more palatable for the middle classes.

Let us not, due to intellectual disdain for the clearly anti-intellectual, underestimate the danger they pose. Many German intellectuals did it during the Weimar Republic and paid a very high price for it.

Just sayin’.

Lou Dobbs “GULP”

The Raw Story

Since opinionated CNN news anchor Lou Dobbs began reporting on a conspiracy theory story that suggested President Barack Obama wasn’t born in the United States, his ratings have fallen some 15 percent.

In two weeks.

Dobbs began reporting on the Obama birth certificate story — circulated by the hard right — on Wednesday, July 15. In the following two weeks, his Nielsen ratings dived — reducing his overall viewers from an estimated 771,000 to 653,000.

Your move, Dobbs.  Make it a good one!

Maher on the “birthers”

LA Times, by Bill Maher

Never underestimate the ability of a tiny fringe group of losers to ruin everything.

For the last couple of weeks, we’ve all been laughing heartily at the wacky antics of the “birthers” — the far-right goofballs who claim Barack Obama wasn’t really

Please point and laugh at me...

born in Hawaii and therefore the job of president goes to the runner-up, former Miss California Carrie Prejean.

Which raises the question: Why, in this country, is it always the religious right that won’t take anything on faith?

So far, the reaction from Democrats is to laugh this off, and I understand why. If you seriously believe that President Obama is an African sleeper spy, get out of your chat room and have your house tested for lead.

Rest the rest of this article here.

Birthers and the 2nd Amendment

Look, now, how the stage is being set for armed insurrection:

* Gun sales have hit record highs since Obama was elected. Those that lead the Neo-Con movement have proclaimed that Obama wants to take away their guns.

* Mainstream media has given voice to those who decry everything Obama does as Socialist, and equate his administration with the Nazis.

* The “birth certificate” issue is re-raised, questioning Obama’s legitimacy to hold the office of President of the United States.

The stage is set for one or more fanatics, who, in the firm belief that they are acting in the best interest of the United States of America, to attempt to assassinate the President.

Now, throw in the latest “race” controversy surrounding the arrest of a highly respected black professor and the fuse is lit.

Let’s face it, millions of people firmly believe that Obama is not the lawful President of the United States. Odds are, some of them are crazy enough to want to take the law into their own hands.

And now we learn that there are racists even within the Department of Homeland Security. Bigotry and intolerance will not go down without a fight. And with mainstream media stoking the fires for its own perverse profits, a peaceful outcome is the least likely scenario.

Right-Winger Thanks Bush for Somali Rescue

Well, didn’t you just know this was coming?

Andy Martin thanks President George W. Bush for rescuing the U.S. ship captain held hostage by Somali pirates

Obama’s “Somali” response sent a message of weakness to our enemies, says Martin

Liberal media again distort the true significance of the rescue [Ed. Did this guy ever hear of a period?]

(NEW YORK)(April 13, 2009) I don’t often have good things to say about former President George W. Bush. But today I want to thank him for the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips, held hostage by Somali criminals and rescued by the U. S. Navy.

The captain was rescued by George W. Bush’s Navy, not Barack Obama’s Navy.

That is why today I am alone in all of America’s media in singing the praises of President George W. Bush. He rescued Captain Phillips.

Well, Obama “proved” himself all right. He proved he is an uncertain and unsteady hand on the tiller.

Barack Obama proved he is the new Jimmy Carter.

Even though Obama has increased the size of the defense budget, it is not enough for these neocons. And the whole Obama Is a Muslim and Not An American Citizen is old and tired. Sorry, fellas, nobody is buying what you’re selling.
