Today is a pretty slow news morning. So let’s keep it short and let’s hope no news of the “breaking” variety will bring more desasters to our desks, than what the inhabitants of our world already have to cope with.
European Stock markets are eagerly waiting for the Fed’s decision on interest rates. They fully expect the Fed to go down another 0.5%. Neither the European central Bank, nor the Swiss, nor the British have as yet lowered interest rates. Well, that gives them leeway for the future, if any should be necessary.
Rudy Giuliani, New York’s ex-mayor is just that, an ex-mayor. He is expected to endorse John McCain later today. John McCain more and more looks like the Republican frontrunner. This has the likes of Ann Coulter and Michelle Malkin foaming at the mouth. It indeed looks like the Republicans are hoping for a change from the Washingtonian establishment in their own way, too.
Florida saw another primary yesterday. The Democratic primaries were worthless, however, because due to a dispute about timing, the National Democratic Party will not invite the Floridian delegates to their National Convention, so their votes won’t count. Hillary Clinton won that primary by 50% to 33% for Barack Obama and 14% for John Edwars. But the delegates won’t be counted, or will they? The Clinton campaign tries to get at least as much spin out of the result as possible. “Europeanview” wonders whether the Floridians will really stay away in September, or if the Clintons will try to make the Party take the decision back, especially if the race remains close after Super Tuesday.
UPDATE: It is as claimed above, the great Huffington Post had an article even yesterday, on the Clinton campaign pushing for the Florida delegates to be counted.
“Europeanview” wishes you all a happy and healthy day. Take care!

Some Free Speech On Mayor’s Words
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani discussed his philosophy of what freedom means in a democracy yesterday at a forum on urban crime, and his remarks left a civil libertarian puzzled and worried. The Mayor, a former United States Attorney in Manhattan, said New Yorkers were inclined to “see only the oppressive side of authority.”
“What we don’t see is that freedom is not a concept in which people can do anything they want, be anything they can be,“ he said at the forum, sponsored by The New York Post. “Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do.”
Asked later about his remarks, Mr. Giuliani said governmental authorities in American society had fallen into disrepute in the last 30 years. He said anarchy would result if everyone were allowed to behave exactly as he wanted and cited Oliver Wendell Holmes’s adage that freedom of expression does not include shouting ‘Fire!’ in a crowded theater.
Norman Siegel, the executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, said he was “floored” by the Mayor’s definition.
“Order is an element of freedom,” Mr. Siegel said. “But to put the emphasis on order rather than on a just and fair society is inverting the meaning and significance of freedom.”
Anyone else out there as alarmed as I am?
There are a great many new poll numbers coming in and the race is getting closer, with three Democratic candidates in a dead heat. But Giuliani is losing, so even Fred Thompson is sniffing out some chances for his campaign and Huckabee gains in California.
The heat is on, on the candidates and John Edwards is getting a especially dirty hit by the National Enquirer (H/T: Huffington Post)
The National Enquirer has gone political in their most recent issue, alleging that John Edwards has fathered a love-child with a filmmaker who once worked on a series of webisodes for his One America Committee. Rumors of the affair between Edwards and the filmmaker, a 43-year-old divorcee named Rielle Hunter, have been denied by both parties.
Now, as the Enquirer has published photos of a clearly pregnant Hunter, she has gone on the record confirming that she is pregnant but denying that Edwards is the father.
In the light of Elizabeth Edwards’ health issues, this story by the Enquirer is way over the top and outright disgusting to me. Can’t they find anything elso to smear the man with?
Why Democrats Should Not Only Fight It, But Also Push For a National Popular Vote Plan

Soon we will learn whether a few desperate but very well-funded Republicans have succeeded in collecting the necessary 434,000 valid signatures to go directly to California voters on a ballot initiative to change the election laws. If the initiative were to succeed, it could significantly help elect a GOP presidential candidate in 2008.
With a tone of considerable loathing, The American Conservative magazine – a very Republican magazine — describes this “California Schemin’” as a gimmick, arising out of a loser mentality, “to change California from a state that awards its electoral votes on a winner-take-all basis to one that hands them out proportionately.” Simply stated, the magazine notes, the goal of this effort is “to scrape up another 20 electoral votes” for the next Republican presidential candidate.
Here is another great video from TPM on Rudy “9/11” Giuliani, and apparently the only message he’s got to run on..
Fox sure seems to like this guy (or rather, he is the one they are trying to so hard to sell – a friend of corporate America? Or just friend of News Corp, Roger Ailes, and Rupert Murdoch?).
Milk it Rudy..
Don’t forget to visit “TheRealRudy“.
Rudy’s chronic dishonesty — on everything from health care to taxes to his own 9/11 performance — just couldn’t be more blatant. He’s basically flaunting it in the face of the media at this point. He’s all but saying to the press, “bring it on.” So when will pundits start talking about Rudy in these terms?
There is so much in the MSM concerning this penchant for Ruy Giuliani to lie, not mis-speak or stretch the truth, with his lies becoming more and more outrageous and arrogant. Even when faced with the fact he is spreading disinformation, his response is to smile and say something even more astounding.
This latest lie: that the survival rate from prostate cancer is much higher in America than in Britain, something which allegedly proves what a disaster socialized medicine has been, has been completely debunked, though according to his campaign spokesperson it is not going to stop him from continuing to say it. He doesn’t CARE that it isn’t true. That makes him perfect for the job to carry the Torch of Untruths and Secrecy that GW and Dick will be leaving behind.
Does America REALLY want another chronic liar in the White House? Someone who has total contempt for the truth, and a total disregard for the people he is trying to sell his lies to? That is not a sign of integrity or character. Definitely not a tool of leadership. Haven’t we already had enough of this kind of destructive behavior?
Its time for the media to call Rudy Giuliani – forcefully – on his lies.
More on TheRealRudy.
More on Rudy Giuliani, liar extraordinaire.
Hey, the guy is all over the place in the newspapers this morning. From the “New York Times” to the “Washington Post” and to “The Guardian” in England.
