I took this picture with my cell phone at the fish ladder in Seattle, WA back in the middle of July. The Coho Chinook (King) salmon had just begun their migration from the ocean to the stream. This is quite the challenge as these very large fish make their way from the ocean, through Puget Sound, up the fish ladders into Lake Washington and then into the feeder streams. Some of these fish will spawn and die while others will make their way back to the sea.
It was amazing to see these large fish swimming outside the fish ladder and then taking turns climbing these ladders. They lined up like cars waiting to pay at a toll booth.
That’s all I got.
UPDATE: Chinook/King spawning.
My apologies for the mix up. I am going to blame the error on Lyme Disease which can mess with one’s mind 😦
This is our Open Thread. Speak Up!
I think that Coho, (silver) while being Salmon, is not King, or Chinook salmon. Ask L.
Thanks for the correction. It is the Chinook and not the Coho. I’ll update my post. I do know that the salmon in my photo is the King or Chinook because they park ranger informed us as to which salmon were running. These fish are really big.
I’m still a bit confused with directions. I keep thinking that I have to travel west instead of east to get to places. My east coast map is still running around in my head.
You do have to travel West — to the coast! 🙂
Yeah, the coast in Oregon is beautiful.
The salmon become intoxicated as they climb/approach the fresh water to spawn.
Nature is simply amazing!
Great photo captures, Cats!
As Shakespeare noted “
alcoholintoxication stimulates the desire and yet takes away from the performance…”I didn’t mean to be picky Cats. Salmon is Salmon until when it isn’t.
Unless it’s Steelhead. 😉
It’s not necessary to trout that out, at this time, this way. 😉
nw – we are now in Eugene, OR and so far, we plan on making this city our next home. This means that we will be close to Portland, the party city.
I’ll spare the world my rant about clear cut logging and its effect on fisheries along with hydroelectric dams, diverting water to Los Angeles and radioactive fish in the Columbia river.
Also, the collapse of salmon fishing in California.
Allathat, yes. I also have the sneaking suspicion that within four or five decades, humans will have so viciously screwed things up that the entire concept of ‘seafood’ will have either become unrecognizable or have disappeared completely. Climate change, caused by the idiot species, plus said species’ unwillingness and/or inability to comprehend the consequences of its greed and lust, may well prove to be the ‘breeze’ that blows down the biosphere’s house of cards. Glad I’ll not be around to see most of it. There are benefits to being an old fart.
The ants will inherit the earth….
And the roaches.
Hope not. Roaches is Teabaggers, ja?
I sure hope I’m dead before seafood disappears.
In CA they have spend quite a bit of money recently on monitoring programs so they can find out what is working and what is not – friend of mine took a job there 3 years ago right in the middle of that. Heard about the inedible fish in the Columbia on NPR coming in.
To summarize a long story.
Warren Buffet is a prick.
Here’s the long story.
http://water4fish.org/
Thanks Vinyl, that’s a lot to read – will pick it over and see what i can get out my friend, she must be seeing some of this.
It should also be noted that many tribal activists and others from the Klamath region waged a spirited campaign for dam removal. They traveled to Omaha Nebraska and elsewhere to protest at shareholder meetings of Warren Buffet’s PacifiCorp Company. They raised awareness that while Mr. Buffet the philanthropist made charitable contributions to relieve hunger and poverty in developing countries, his dams contributed to the hunger and poverty of people living in the Klamath region.
I didn’t hear about the radioactive fish. Is this because of the destruction of the nuclear power plant in Japan?
no I think it is Hanford – Hiroshima and Nagasaki’s revenge
I’m sure you and Nonewhere could have long discussions about this. He hates dams.
The dams on the Columbia have turned it into a series of silty, dirty lakes. *spit*
Hmmh. The Columbia and the Colorado Rivers seem to have a lot in common. All thanx to hominid(iot)s.
Ayn Rand Akbar!
A very dangerous man atop a very dangerous mindset in this country. I hope his fall is as meteoric as his rise – and starts this week.
Rafael is bad news.
Speaking of “Hominid(iot)s” . . . hiya, to the Rafael Cruz-ifix.
My friend works in the fisheries regulation/monitoring industry in CA. Sticking RFID tags in the juvenile salmon on the way out and counting them on the way back, monitoring the water and so on.
Rand Paul is going to start pushing a constitutional amendment outlawing any special exemptions of health care coverage for government employees — that would mean all federal workers would have to purchase health insurance on the new Obamacare exchanges instead of getting taxpayer-funded subsidies. Congress, the SCOTUS, everyone.
Populist Paul.
He won’t get far with that. Congress can’t even get an amendment passed defining ‘people’.
I like hitting the people at the top with this, but the US postal worker too? That health care is one of the few good sides to being a fed, isn’t it? we smack the 99% around to get at the 1% again.
That just well could cause massive erectile disfunction in DC. Please pass the popcorn.
It only takes 13 states voting it down to defeat it. Ask Phyllis Schlafly.
And I’m sure there are at least 13 states who think his ideas are too loony to become law in the USA..
Wouldn’t they get taxpayer subsides if their income meets the criteria? I think the only way to get the Obamacare subsidy is by purchasing on the exchange. I wonder if Rand has really thought this through.
congressmen don’t fall below the 400% of the Federal Poverty level.
$11,460 x 4 = $45,840 no subsidy for them
I was thinking of the rest of the federal workers, many of whom would fall below the threshold if they have a family.
IRONY ALERT!

I got 2/3 way through that (absolutely hilarious) then I saw Sofia Vergara on the righ hand side in a red gown …. and then I wanted to be a cheeseburger…. maybe the only time in my life I have ever *wanted* to be a cheeseburger…..
Cats, we have several fish hatcheries/fish ladders on the Clearwater, and it just occurred to me that I take the fact that they such amazing places for granted.
I used to take my men to the fish hatcheries when they were younger, and we could spend hours watching the monstrously huge Steelhead leaping up the ladder one by one. Then we’d go look at the series of ponds that held the baby fishes of various ages, which were protected by netting over our heads, to keep the osprey from feasting on the young fishies.
We were introduced early to the nasty racist attitude of some White men in the area, when they’d piss and moan out loud about the “filthy Indians” being allowed to fish right next to the fish ladder at the Ahsahka fishery, while they weren’t allowed to do so. Nevermind the fact that most of Clearwater county, including Ahsahka and Orofino and their fisheries are on the Nez Perce Reservation. Assholes.
I can’t stand these white dupaholes. I once over heard a conversation at a restaurant in South Dakota. This man was telling his friend that was visiting the area, that he was angry and that he hated the people that came to South Dakota to hunt deer because he viewed those deer as his personal property. What a jerk.
I bet he enjoys the benefits of all those tourist dollars, but can’t see past the end of his stupid nose.
He enjoys the land that he inherited from his grandfather that was taken from the Lakotah even more.
The Senate just confirmed the first openly gay Circuit Court judge, 98 to 0!
I take those “98-0” votes with a grain of salt. It usually means is that someone proposed a unanimous consent request that they be confirmed and nobody present objected. And if some douchebag (Sens Rand and Cruz, I’m looking in your direction) decides to object and force the chamber into a recorded vote, I bet it would be closer to along party lines.
But if this were an actual recorded vote and the judge was confirmed 98-0, then I’m both impressed and puzzled. Why does anybody object to any judge?
Either that or the Republicans didn’t realize for whom they were voting.
QOTD:
“I actually don’t really get the point of paparazzi anymore. It’s not like back in the day where they sold pictures to magazines. Now they just put them online. I don’t really know how they make money.” — Miley Cyrus, making a pretty good point .
While defunding Obamacare is getting all the press, the House GOP bill to raise the debt ceiling is chock full o’ crazy: means testing medicare, gutting EPA rules, repealing Dodd-Frank, building Keystone XL, and of course, tax cuts.
Bonus: “Job-rich Keystone XL pipeline” phrase in GOP bill. Are they high?

Ted Cruz. Great Reagan, or greatest Reagan who ever Reaganed?

QOTD II:
“So I’m at the Patrons Ball tonight and Lynne Cheney, the mother of Liz, comes up to my father-in-law [Alan Simpson] and tells him to … I believe the direct quote was “Shut your mouth” regarding his support of Mike Enzi,” – Deb Oakley Simpson, on her Facebook page.
A lovely family.///
Cruz just began his filibuster 2:42 PM… “I intend to speak until I can no longer.”
That shouldn’t last too long – he’ll get bored about the third hour.
Rafael Cruz just admitted that he didn’t read the 20,000 pages of regulations for Obamacare and he claims that President Obama didn’t read all the pages either. Then he went on to bet all the money in his bank account that no one else in Congress read the 20,000 pages either. If this is true, then Cruz and Rand and all the other fools can’t argue their points because they don’t have all the facts. Then again, that never stopped a Republican from making an argument.
That was one of the most maddening parts of the whole lead up to the ACA votes. Virtually every GOoPer was running around with a huge stack of paper and claiming that no one could have possibly read it all. And yet? Not a single member of the “librul media” thought to ask them why they could argue against a bill they just admitted they had not read.
I wonder if he is wearing a “Texas catheter” strapped to his leg so that he doesn’t need to stop for a pee break. He could be wearing an adult diaper, too.
Diaper Dave Vitter probably has some fresh ones in his desk drawer.
So he yielded the floor to his BFF Mike Lee, for a question, ten minutes ago and the camera is on Lee without Cruz in sight!
Is this the pee break?
He speaks, but he never actually says anything.
I saw his lips moving and I heard some sounds come out of his mouth but he hasn’t said anything of substance. What exactly is it that he thinks he will gain from this filibuster?
Free publicity.
Hi, gang.
I’m still having waaaay too much fun flying to hang around much. I’m slowly working the bugs out of the new glider but I’m close enough that I have started adding trim colors. The next step will be to cover the rudder in blue and orange to match the wing tips. I really have to find a competent camera operator so you can all see how pretty it looks and sounds in the air. All gliders “sing” but something in the combination of cooling holes I’ve added has given this one a very rousing “song”.
Cheers!
Wow, pete! That’s almost big enough to have a pilot in the cockpit!
Nice looking plane!
Thanks, Ebb. At 8 1/2 feet from tip to tip it’s the second biggest plane I’ve ever had. It’s a Chinese cheapo so it’s taken a bit of ingenuity but it’s very rewarding to fly.
It’s National Punctuation Day
It is amazing how they line up in an orderly manner and wait patiently for their turn to climb the ladder.
Unlike boorish humans who cut in line, then pretend to be outraged when you call them out.
Or idiot drivers who pass a line of a hundred cars, then jam their way into the line, thus causing the line. Kindergarten was lost on those morons.
And, as an extra added bonus, Chinook salmon, and their cousins the Silvers, Pinks and Humpies, do not carry guns and shoot each other.
It is an amazing thing to see. I could have stayed there all afternoon just watching the fish.
7.7 magnitude earthquake hits Pakistan, creates island off coast.

How on earth (no pun intended) did a 7.7 mag quake raise up an island without causing a massive tsunami? Curious minds just need to know…?!

A question to those running Chrome: I just restarted my computer, and a new thingy appeared on the left end of my bookmarks bar. It says ‘Apps’, but when I click on it, it just opens a Chrome window that says ‘chrome://apps/’ in the URL, with two icons, ‘Store’ and ‘Google Search’ in the page.
Does anybody else see this, is it as new to you as it is to me, and do you have any use for it?
I don’t see it, but our app interface is tightly controlled by our IT overlords.
I can, however, go to the rightmost menu, More and find the “Find more apps” menu item at the bottom.
That takes me to https://www.google.com/enterprise/marketplace/?pli=1
That said, I notice that Der Googles is ‘always innovating’ and ‘pushing the envelope’. Looks like they may have gotten a paper cut on their tongue from licking the envelope one time too many.
Restarted my computer, after reading your comment, don’t see ‘Apps’.
Thanks for looking. (BTW, I don’t usually do apps. They generally lead to trouble.)
There should be left sort of arrow on the left side of the apps page that takes you to the “most visited” page (which is the typical page people see on a new tab or when opening chrome).
I have no idea what this means.
My brain won’t take any more training for the ACA…..grrrrr
What is this ‘training’, of which you speak? (I don’t do ‘help’ or ‘tutorials’ either.)
Broker Certification Training through CMS, Broker Certification for each carrier selling on and off the exchange. Annual Medicare Certification. Continuing Education Hours and tests.
pass the Glenlivet….
FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR
Truth be told, I’m more worried about all the laws allowing guns at the local mall than I am foreign terrorists. They don’t need to attack us. We’re attacking each other while they just sit back and laugh at us.
US malls focus on security upgrades following deadly Kenya siege | Fox News
But not following the latest bloody mass killing by a gun nut …..
Bingo!
Why the fuck do people think that what happens in another country, especially one not set up with our Constitutional form of government and guaranteed freedoms, could happen here? Are they claiming that life in Kenya is no different than life in America? What, now they love Kenya?

You call this a filibuster. Ted Cruz’s wife calls it dinner. #ILoseWithCruz
— @LOLGOP
She says, “Rafael, I would like to see more eating and hear less talking.”
Cruz, totally exposed:
Ezra Klein dissects Cruz’s claim that he is speaking for the American people:
“Cruz opposes raising taxes on the wealthy. The public supports it. Cruz opposes gun control. The public supports it. Cruz supports sharply cutting spending on Medicare and Social Security. The public opposes it. If Cruz actually believed his job was directly representing the will of the people, his voting record would be extremely different than it is.
Which is why it’s so odd Cruz has chosen this argument. He could just be up there arguing against Obamacare. Instead he’s arguing that we need to #MakeDCListen. He’s making a broad, quasi-philosophical argument that senators should more fully reflect public opinion. But even he doesn’t believe it. Cruz’s filibuster is self-refuting.”
Rafael is one, self righteous son of bitch, isn’t he? He really is impressed with himself. I’ll bet he smiles at himself every time he passes a mirror. There has to be a sex scandal someplace involving this conceited man.

Every Texas metaphor either deals with sex or barnyard animals, usually both. — Paul Begala
Well, he’s from Texas, so, according to Paul Begala, it’s likely.
Dressing up like Hugh Hefner doesn’t count?
Watched him for 15 seconds or so demagoguing to Joe Camel … she didn’t even try to ask a question of substance. Not like Candy Crowley’s round of ‘Have you stopped beating your husband’ interview with Nancy P at the weekend.
He really believes he is the embodiment of gravitas.
In reality, he’s ridiculous and an embarrassment to the Senate and this country.
I don’t know, I’m always a little bit convinced that a conman smiles a bit if he’s in the middle of what he considers a clever con. It does get hard to tell with these folks though, some of them do seem to be stupid enough to sincerely believe in themselves.

Cute kitten.
I thought a post about salmon should include a tribute to Salmon Enchanted Evening.
Excellent!
As someone said in reply to this tweet, I love this photo, it says it all.
Ah, yes. How quickly the GOP (and America) forgets.
Salmon, Salmon, Salmon. Here’s the latest report on the current run in the Columbia river. Chinook, yes, Coho not so much.

There was certainly something fishy about this place today. 🙂
It’s all bait and switch.
