The Watering Hole, Thursday, October 18th, 2012: Romney’s Foreign to Foreign Policy

While we’re all still on a bit of a contact high from President Obama’s excellent performance in Tuesday night’s debate, the final Presidential Debate, supposedly covering U.S. foreign policy, looms just around the corner. As a follow-up to my post on Monday, I’m offering two pertinent articles from Foreign Policy magazine.

The first is a piece of rather hawkish advice offered to President Obama by David Rothkopf, which, in part, points out the frightening fact that:

“To get to buried Iranian facilities, such as the enrichment plant at Fordow, would require bunker-busting munitions on a scale that no Israeli plane is capable of delivering. The mission, therefore, must involve the United States, whether acting alone or in concert with the Israelis and others.”

Oy!

The second, as I mentioned on Monday, is a return to Mitt Romney’s recent foreign-policy speech at VMI (Virginia Military Institute.) While I find it disturbing for a Presidential candidate to be obviously undermining his audience’s Commander-in-Chief, even more disturbing were Romney’s comments about the recent tragic attack on our embassy in Benghazi. This line in particular jumped out at me: “These mobs hoisted the black banner of Islamic extremism over American embassies on the anniversary of 9/11.” I’m still looking, but I have not found ANY independent corroboration of this little tidbit.

The following are a few more excepts. Of course, it figures that Romney is a proponent of an Obama Administration policy with which many of us liberals take great issue.

“Drones and the modern instruments of war are important tools in our fight, but they are no substitute for a national security strategy for the Middle East.”

Anyway, Romney continues…

“It is time to change course in the Middle East. That course should be organized around these bedrock principles: America must have confidence in our cause, clarity in our purpose and resolve in our might. No friend of America will question our commitment to support them. No enemy that attacks America will question our resolve to defeat them. And no one anywhere, friend or foe, will doubt America’s capability to back up our words.”

Based on this attitude, Romney wants to pour an unnecessary and unasked-for $2 trillion-with-a-T into the Department of Defense.

“I’ll work with Israel to increase our military assistance and coordination. For the sake of peace, we must make clear to Iran through actions, not just words, that their nuclear pursuit will not be tolerated.
I’ll reaffirm our historic ties to Israel and our abiding commitment to its security. The world must never see any daylight between our two nations.

Why? The United States of America is NOT the same country, we don’t share the same culture or the same history as Israel; we are not geographical neighbors experiencing common challenges. The Constitution says nothing about our country’s ability to create a new country, nor about then being responsible for that new country forever. The President of the United States swears an oath to protect and defend our Constitution, and that oath does not mention protecting and defending Israel as well. Israel is fully capable of defending itself, having been greatly helped by our military and financial assistance. Isn’t it time to cut the cord and let the allegedly adult sovereign state of Israel be responsible for its own actions? But I digress…

“Finally, I will recommit America to the goal of a democratic, prosperous Palestinian state living side by side in peace and security with the Jewish state of Israel. On this vital issue, the President has failed, and what should be a negotiation process has devolved into a series of heated disputes at the United Nations. In this old conflict, as in every challenge we face in the Middle East, only a new President will bring the chance to begin anew.”

Now, that’s the ultimate lying hypocrisy from Romney, who, in the infamous, supposedly-private “47% speech” to big-money donors, said:

“And I look at the Palestinians not wanting to see peace anyway, for political purposes, committed to the destruction and elimination of Israel, and these thorny issues, and I say there’s just no way. And so what you do is you say you move things along the best way you can. You hope for some degree of stability, but you recognize that it’s going to remain an unsolved problem. I mean, we look at that in China and Taiwan. All right, we have a potentially volatile situation, but we sort of live with it. And we kick the ball down the field and hope that ultimately, somehow, something will happen and resolve. We don’t go to war to try and resolve it.

In other words, Romney has no plan for the Middle East. Does this mean that Romney’s believes in “hopey-changey”?

I also ran across this interesting and helpful analysis on Romney’s VMI speech, by Andrew Quinn.

This is our daily open thread–what do YOU have to say?

    • Nuck FewsWeak. I have five free articles from NY Times on my phone, and when I hit that limit, I switch to CNN and get it for free. Someone needs to inform them of this amazing thing called advertising as a source of online revenue model.

  1. Romney to “Job Creators”: Tell your employees that if they don’t vote for me, you’ll fire them. http://thinkprogress.org/election/2012/10/17/1037881/leaked-audio-romney-employers/

Just don’t say it in so many words. Say it like…gee, I’m just trying to help you make an informed decision when you vote for the next President and, gosh, if we have more of the same as we had the last four years, well, gollly, I’m gonna have to lay off a few thousand employees. That’s something you might want to think about when you go to vote.

Fast forward to some future election cycle, where propositions are on the ballot in several states, and the “Job Creators” tell their employees:

gee, I’m just trying to help you make an informed decision when you vote on the [eliminate the minimum wage initiative] [eliminate child labor laws initiative] [eliminate environmental protections initiative] [eliminate workplace safety initiative] [eliminate taxes on businesses initiative] [cut taxes for the wealthy initiative] [ban labor unions initiative] well, golly, if that initiative doesn’t pass, I’m gonna have to lay off a few thousand employees. That’s something you might want to think about when you go to vote.

Behind closed doors, Romney advised rich folks how to commit thinly veiled extortion. Is his suggestion legal? I don’t know. Free Speech/Citizen’s United, and all. It’s a pretty safe bet that Fox News will defend Romney’s behind the scenes electioneering.

Class warfare? The rich have been waging it against the masses for thousands of years. It’s just that revelations like this give the masses a small glimpse at the tactics used to manipulate them.

  2. Continuing my gripe about Obama’s response to Willard’s jobs bullshit at the October 16th debate, here are the…

    QsOTD:

“I’m going to make sure you get a job. Thanks Jeremy. Yeah, you bet,” – Mitt Romney, October 16.

“As president, I will create 12 million new jobs,” – Mitt Romney, October 16.

“The government doesn’t create jobs,” – Mitt Romney, October 16.

  3. Romney keeps talking about the number of unemployed. My question to Romney would be, “How many of these people lost their jobs because of Bain Capital? How many of these job losses are due to you (Romney) sending jobs overseas after making a huge profit off the losses of a business? ” Romney still owns 51% of Bain Capital. I’ll bet he wouldn’t want to discuss that.

  4. Why hasn’t Mitt been questioned about Sensata?
I know he wouldn’t give a real answer.
He would just lie to try to cover up another of his lies.

    • Hi, vinylspear. I have a new plane in the air. I went with my own electronics so the plane itself was only $50.00 and I have even more power than the one in the video. I’ve never been as good, or fearless, as the young man in the video but I’m still amazed at how good the plane makes me look. I even took it out last night to fly in the empty, lighted, parking lot across the street!

  5. Google doodle honors a classic

Moby Dick was first published on Oct. 18, 1851 in London as a three-part story titled The Whale. It was printed in its entirety by New York’s Harper and Brothers later that year.

  6. More disconnection from reality. Where sane people want nothing more, or less, from journalists than for them to say “that’s not true” at FAUX”News” they think it should be enough to fire said journalist. Of course, these are the same freaks who bellow “librul bias” if a journalist says “we’ll have to leave it there” without their side getting the last word.

  7. Missouri Observer Says Senate Race ‘Too Close To Call’

Against Todd Akin?? I can’t decide if this is because McCaskill’s campaign has been run so poorly or the Missouri voters are raving lunatics. Probably both.

    • It never ceases to amaze me about how insecure fundamentalists are. If God or Jehovah or Allah is all-powerful, why would the deity give a damn about ancient rock carvings? Then again, the God in the OT is really insecure as well and worrying constantly about losing out to some other god. “Other god”? Um, but I thought…

    • Sad to read that. Brought to mind the senseless destruction:

Afghan Taliban leader orders destruction of ancient statues

      AFP, Feb.26, 2001

“Based on the verdict of the clergymen and the decision of the supreme court of the Islamic Emirate (Taliban) all the statues around Afghanistan must be destroyed,” said the decree.

      ‘Buddha statues destroyed completely’

      The News, March 13, 2001

Intolerance of others, in the *name* of religion, sickens me.

  8. Good job Ryan.

Soup Kitchen In Paul Ryan Photo-Op Faces Donor Backlash

WASHINGTON — In the wake of Rep. Paul Ryan’s embarrassing soup kitchen photo-op last week, the organization that runs the facility tells The Huffington Post that donors have begun pulling their money out of the Youngstown, Ohio charity.

Ryan may have suffered a few late-night jokes, but the fallout for the soup kitchen appears to be far more bruising. Brian J. Antal, president of the Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society, confirmed that donors have begun an exodus in protest over Ryan’s embarrassment. The monetary losses have been big. “It appears to be a substantial amount,” Antal said. “You can rest assured there has been a substantial backlash.”

    • Are these donors Romney/Ryan humpers? Otherwise, why pull the money?

The soup kitchen didn’t invite him there, he barged in like the asshole he is.

The poor and homeless shouldn’t pay for that. Anyone who has pulled their donation was just looking for an excuse.

    • My best friend runs the St Vinny’s operations in the southern part of the state here. I emailed him to see what he has heard.

  9. Queen Ann on The View: (This quote is from a Fox News Site)

Moments later, Goldberg asked Romney if her husband’s Mormon faith precluded him or their five sons from serving in the military and whether the Romneys would be prepared to console relatives of fallen U.S. soldiers. Many Mormons serve in the military and the faith does not bar them from doing so.

“He was serving his mission and my five sons also served [on] missions,” Ann Romney replied. “We find different ways of serving.”

Seeking converts to your faith does not equal serving your country. I dislike this family more every day.

  10. Ben Stein Stuns Fox & Friends: ‘All Due Respect To Fox’ But ‘Taxes Are Too Low’

Author and economist Ben Stein joined Fox & Friends on Thursday where he stunned the hosts after he called for raising the tax rates on people making more than $2 million per year. He said that he did not think that the United States simply had a spending problem, and cited the early post-war period as an example of a time when you could have high tax rates and high growth.

He said some time ago that the top marginal rate could be as high as 50%, without significant impact on the economy.

  12. Mitt is delivering some funny stuff, but he’s making two mistakes:

    1) He’s reading from his script too much; and
    2) He’s making that awful lip-smacking noise.

  13. Oh dear…

Things reached a boiling point when Fields accused [Keith] Ellison of having been behind a recent story about Fields’ divorce six years ago in which his ex-wife accused him of domestic violence.

“You are a low-life scumbag. You are a low-life scumbag,” Ellison said at a point when Fields began making remarks on Ellison’s own divorce.

It gets worse from there. 😯

  14. There’s been an arrest in the Va case of throwing away voter registration forms. Maybe it’s just me and I don’t generally make determinations based on appearance but, judging by the mug shot, I would guess that this guy falls somewhere between skinhead and cannibalistic serial killer on the political scale.

  15. I had an encounter today with a longtime friend of my neighbor Peckerhead Pete. I told this man I would share what he told me with this website and therefor possibly the world and that I would call him the Minorican Philosopher.

The very, very light political conversation we were having provided me the opportunity to inform him that Mormons believed in polygamy, allowing a man to have more than one wife. He floored me when he commented that he thought that that was okay, that “I think a man should be able to marry as many women as he can find a job for!”

Like some of Mitt’s jokes tonight the Minorcan Philosopher’s comment was funny, if not very funny, and it was delivered much better.

  16. Running behind as usual, I’m watching Lawrence O’Donnell ‘call out’ Tagg Romney over his wanting to take a swing at Obama. O’Donnell kept using the younger Romney’s full name, Taggert, and I could almost hear him saying it so that it rhymed with ‘faggot’. Did I imagine that?

    • Lawrence was letting his Boston accent come through on some words.
Note: there are few times he drops the last ‘r’ of liar, that becomes lia.
It’s heard (dropped) again when he says “Tagga()t”.
*wicked pissed off* is tell-tale Lawrence is from Massachusetts!

(my Mom was from Lowell – just outside of Boston so I’m familiar with the accent)

      • Whoopi was aware of the Rmoney cowardice. She handled backing the arrogant Ann into blurting out it wasn’t against their religion and had to trip over her tongue in an attempt to rationalize that proselytizing was the equivalent of serving in the military.
Useless – the entire family – useless.
