Plame, Wilson to take CIA leak lawsuit to Supreme Court

Former CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson and her husband, former ambassador Joseph Wilson, plan to take their civil lawsuit against Bush administration officials to the Supreme Court after a federal circuit court refused to rehear the case on Monday.

Wilson v. Cheney, filed in 2006, charges that Bush administration officials such as Vice President Cheney, and aides Karl Rove and I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, violated Plame’s constitutional rights in allegedly engineering the outing Plame, who was undercover at the time, as retaliation against her husband, an Iraq war critic, who had been sent to Niger in 2002 to investigate the possible sale of yellowcake uranium to Iraq. While Wilson reported back that such sales were unlikely to have taken place, President Bush asserted to the contrary in his 2003 State of the Union address, prompting Wilson to speak out publicly in a July 6, 2003 New York Times piece entitled “What I Didn’t Find in Africa.”

Their chances might be getting better now that Scott McClellan has started speaking out..

In this clip, Scott McClellan is speaking at the (November) 2008 Miami Book Fair on C-SPAN Book TV, and he SAYS that George Bush admitted authorizing the leaking of parts of the classified NIE which resulted in the ‘outing’ of Valerie Plame. Outing a covert CIA operative in a time of war is treason. George Bush, while President of the United States, committed treason by authorizing leaking of classified intelligence in order to destroy his ‘political enemies’.

Dodd calls for investigation into Bush role in Plame affair

Yesterday, the news about Scott McClellan’s upcoming book What Happened hit the wires, including an intriguing (and possibly damning) excerpt. The book accuses President Bush and several other top administration officials of lying and misleading the American people regarding the leaking of Valerie Plame’s name to the press on July 14, 2003.

Following the news report on Tuesday, Senator Chris Dodd called for a Justice Department investigation into President Bush’s role in events surrounding the outing of ex-CIA agent Valerie Plame.

“Today’s revelations by Mr. McClellan are very disturbing and raise several important questions that need to be answered,” Dodd wrote in a statement posted at his campaign’s website on Tuesday. “If in fact the President of the United of States knowingly instructed his chief spokesman to mislead the American people, there can be no more fundamental betrayal of the public trust.”

Later in the statement, Dodd asked that newly confirmed US Attorney General Michael Mukasey investigate the president’s involvement in the matter.

“During his confirmation process, Attorney General Mukasey said he would act independently,” the senator added. “Accordingly, today, I call on the Attorney General to live up to his word and launch an immediate investigation to determine the facts of this case, the extent of any cover up and determine what the President knew and when he knew it.” Read on…

McClellan implicates Bush, Cheney in Plame lie

On Oct. 10, 2003, White House press secretary Scott McClellan stood before the cameras and proclaimed Karl Rove and Scooter Libby innocent of any involvement in the outing of Valerie Plame. “Those individuals — I talked — I spoke with those individuals, as I pointed out, and those individuals assured me they were not involved in this. And that’s where it stands.”

And that’s where it stood, until — well after George W. Bush was reelected — it became clear that both Libby and Rove were very much involved in outing Plame. McClellan has since acknowledged, albeit implicitly, that Libby and Rove had lied to him. Now he seems ready to go much further. In “What Happened,” a chronicle of his years in the White House to be published this spring, McClellan will apparently implicate George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and former White House Chief of Staff Andy Card in the false exoneration of Libby and Rove.

From an excerpt posted on McClellan’s publisher’s Web site and discovered by Editor and Publisher:

“The most powerful leader in the world had called upon me to speak on his behalf and help restore credibility he lost amid the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. So I stood at the White house briefing room podium in front of the glare of the klieg lights for the better part of two weeks and publicly exonerated two of the senior-most aides in the White House: Karl Rove and Scooter Libby.

“There was one problem. It was not true.

“I had unknowingly passed along false information. And five of the highest ranking officials in the administration were involved in my doing so: Rove, Libby, the vice president, the president’s chief of staff, and the president himself.”

Better late then never I guess… But he wins the big “DUH” award.. McClellan’s book comes out in April.
